Spanish World Cup Football Team 2010
Update: Congratulations to the 2010 World Champions!
Spain are one of the odds on favourites for the 2010 World Cup, ranked the best footballing nation in the World, they were famously considered to be one of the World's underachievers, often picked to do strongly in tournaments & never making it, and are considered the greatest footballing side never to win the World Cup (along with The Netherlands).
Spain only participated in 2 of the first 6 world cups, reaching the quarter finals in 1934 & the Semis in 1950, however in the 1960's and 1970's were dark days for Spanish football, with them failing to get past the first qualification rounds in 3 world cups, and failing to qualify for two. In 1982 on their home soil, Spain limped out in the second round.
From 1986, Spain's performances have improved dramatically, qualifying emphatically for each World Cup. They reached the quarter finals on three occassions (1986, 1994 & 2002), and have only failed to advance from the first round once (in 1998). Despite this success that many teams would be proud off, they are still seen as massive underachievers on the World Stage.
Spain however, by virtue of their Euro 2008 win, are ranked number 1 in the World & are surely favourites for the tournament. This was solidified in the qualification campaign for South Africa 2010, with 10 wins out of 10. They have been seeded for the World Cup finals, getting in their group Switzerland, Honduras & Chile.
